| This is "Lizzie" my Listeroid
slow speed (650 rpm) 6hp water cooled diesel engine driving a ST 5kw single
phase generator head.
This unit supplies 120/240 AC power to our home and shop.
|
 |
| The tank on the right is for the
thermosyphen cooling of the engine.
The engine is mounted on two rail road ties buried in the
ground.
|
 |
| Wintertime in Montana can have
some cold mornings. "Lizzie" lives outside and
hand crank starting at zero degrees is a young mans sport.
This 5hp gas "pony motor" makes winter starting of a
Listeroid plum easy ... even for an old duffer!
Simply start the gas engine ... slip a "V" belt over the
flywheel and around the pulley on the gasser. The Gasser is mounted on a
slid so you simply slide the gasser to tighten the belt and Lizzie is off
and spinning ... after a few turns ... off with the compression release and
wala ... she is running.
|
 |
| Pony motor on the lower left ..
DC alternator on the lower right. The copper tube on
the right is one of the heat exchangers to pre-heat WVO. Amo can on the
right holds the heated WVO. The green fuel tank in the upper right holds
diesel for starting and shut down.
Alternator and 5kw ST generator both drive off of the
flywheel on the right. Both use flat serpentine belts. |
 |
| Hot water for the WVO pre heat is
provided by the engine.
Thermostat is contained in the green flange with the 3/4
pipe which is attached to the head.
The spacer with the copper tube between the head and the
thermostat flange provide hot head water to the WVO pre heat system.
|
 |
| Another shot of the heat
exchanger and the amo box fuel tank for WVO.
The amo box WVO tank has 3/8 copper tube loop inside near
the bottom for hot water. It is soldered to the amo box end
Hot water from the head supplies heated water to two heat
exchangers, fuel filter, fuel lines and WVO fuel tank
|
 |
| Heated fuel filter has the copper
tube coil around.
The black pipe insulation covers the second heat exchanger
just prior to the injection pump which is located on left end of the heat
exchanger. There is one heat exchanger before the fuel filter and one after.
|
 |
| Adding oil and draining oil from
the Listeroid has always been a challenge. With this addition oil can be
added by removing the pipe cap, opening the valve and by using a funnel pour
the new oil in.
If the vertical pipe were replaced with a clear tube of
some sort the oil level could be seen without pulling the dip stick.
To drain the oil ... remove the cap, turn the pipe down
and open the valve. |
 |
| As of April 29, 2005 I have
logged 1,780 hours on Lizzie using WVO for fuel.
As of a few days ago I am starting and shutting down on
biodiesel ... no more $2.50 per gallon diesel fuel from the pump in town.
|
I am now producing biodiesel to
run in my 1981 Datsun diesel pickup ... so far ... it seems to be doing real
well.
