Multiple Conditions

Sometimes a rule with only one condition is adequate to fulfill rule filtering requirements. However, when you need to create more complex rules, you may want to use multiple conditions. By creating multiple rule conditions, you can both save time and create a more compact rules file.

For example, if you want all emails from your supervisor containing information about "project updates" to be sent to a specific mailbox in your account, you would set a rule with two conditions: 1) the message must be from your supervisor, and 2) the message must contain the words "project updates" in the subject or message body of the email.

To create a rule with multiple conditions:

  1. Select the rule from the rule page.

  2. Click the Edit button. The Edit Rules page appears.

    1. Click the Insert AND button to state that all the conditions in the rule must be met for the message to be trapped, or

    2. Click the Insert OR button to state that at least one of the conditions must be met for the message to be trapped. The Add Rule Condition page appears. Add your new condition.

    3. Click the Save and Close button to return to the Edit Rules page.

  3. Repeat a or b and c above for each new condition you create.

  4. You can keep the existing Actions taken when your conditions are met, or change them prior to saving your rule.

  1. Click the Save and Close button.

Using the Add Rule Condition Page

For instructions on adding conditions to rules, see Creating Rules.

Use the Add Rule Condition page to select the message field that you want to filter, use comparisons (contains/does not contain) to have the delivery rule filter messages, enter search text, and match or not match search text case. You can also use this page to create multiple conditions for rules.

  • Save and Close. Click this button to save any changes you make to the page.

  • Cancel. Click this button to cancel any changes you make to this page.

  • Where. Choose one of the following message field options that you wish to filter:

  • From

  • Subject

  • Sender

  • To

  • Body

  • Header

  • Comparison

  • Contains. Select this option to have the delivery rule filter messages that contain the search text.

  • Does NOT Contain. Select this option to have the delivery rule filter messages that do not contain the search text.

  • Search. Enter search text or specify an external file that contains the text for which you are searching. Enter the text by doing one or more of the following:

  • Enter the literal text that you want to search for. For example, if you want to filter for the word "mortgage," enter mortgage.

  • Type search expressions and quantifiers known as shown in text patterns. Your administrator can assist you with this.

  • Paste a portion of a mail message that meets your search criteria. For example, you could copy and paste text such as "XMSMailPriority(High)" from a message header; this would search for High Priority messages.

  • Match Case. Select the check box to search for text that matches the case of the search text. Clear the check box to ignore the text case.
