BECKY'S ACCIDENT |
UPDATES FROM BARRY.... | ||||
|
We are so excited about the
progress Becky has made with her Physical Therapist Rebecca.
On her first visit Rebecca made a thorough assessment of
Becky's ability and immediately began to help Becky with
her walking. The pictures show Becky on the treadmill with
Rebecca assisting. These pictures were taken nearly a month
ago, and since then Becky has improved tremendously. Just
last Monday she went for 6 minutes at about 2 miles an hour
on the treadmill, while walking almost flawlessly. I was
amazed at the improvement and am extremely proud of Becky's
hard work.
Another emotional moment was at church in Stevensville on Sabbath March 4. Sabbath School had started and there was no one there to play the piano for song service. So Becky volunteered. She played through song service one handed, and it was the first time she had played publicly since June 18, at Camp meeting, the day before her accident. As you can imagine, there wasn't a dry eye in the place, and we praised God that Becky's gift of music can still be used to give glory to God. One last item, please pray for Becky in the next few weeks, she and Barry are flying to Brisbane Australia March 21 where Becky will be speaking at a women's retreat. We ask that you would pray for her safe travel and that God would give her the words to be a blessing to the women of Queensland Australia. After the retreat, Barry and Becky will enjoy a "Second Honeymoon" in Australia and New Zealand on their return flight. This is a trip they have looked forward to for a long time as they are celebrating nearly 20 years of marriage. (Praise God for this as Becky's accident happened only 4 days after their 19th anniversary). ***************************************************** Better look both ways when your out driving because Becky is back on the road again! After a thorough evaluation at Community Medical Center Rehab, Becky was approved to begin driving again. She passed with flying colors and the therapist who evaluated her said she felt totally safe riding all around Missoula and on I-90 with Becky at the wheel. Becky is now driving herself to therapy, errands, shopping and other fun activities with friends around the valley. So keep your eyes peeled for a bright red Suburban, it just might be Becky sneaking up on you! ***************************************************** Becky is making great strides on the rehab of her left arm. the latest pictures show her getting increased extension (up to 135 degrees so far!). Also she has muscle movement in her hand as she can spread her fingers apart and back together again. This is significant because it means that nerve conduction is moving muscles clear down into her hands, something we hadn't expected to see so soon. For those wondering about Becky's piano playing it will do you heart good to know I caught her playing the other day very well with her right hand and filling in the base line with the pinkie on her left! It was music to my ears!
Becky also got a new hinged brace on her
left leg which has really helped keep her knee from overextending.
It is also making it possible for her to walk quite well, sometimes
without a cane (she forgets that she needs one sometimes!).
We are spending Christmas at my parent's
in Wyoming for a few days. Pray for Becky during this time away from
her therapists because she tends to stiffen up and lose some ground
temporarily when she isn't seeing them every day.
Becky and Barry preached at the Worland
Wyoming church Dec. 24 and shared their story. Many seemed blessed
by the message of searching for the gift of God's presence during
difficult times.
We're also wrestling 3 Beagle puppies,
we've sold 4 of the seven but still have 2 boys and one girl left.
Hannah's having a great time, but Barry says they make a lousy alarm
clock. Especially at 4 a.m!
God bless you all, and Merry Christmas!
Barry.
***************************************************** Sorry that updates are slow, but life has been busy since we got home and progress is slower too. Becky continues to improve, but we are at the stage where it's a millimeter at a time, literally. We met with Becky's rehab doctor yesterday and he explained to us that the progress in Becky's left arm is literally improving at the rate of 1 millimeter per day as the nerve fibers in her shoulder continue to heal and grow. This progress means that already muscles in her upper arm (Biceps and Triceps) are getting better nerve signals but muscles controlling hand a finger movement are still not getting all the signal they need. It will be months and perhaps years before we know how much progress we will see, so it's a real waiting game. Becky has also seen her neuro-surgeon recently and he said things were healing well and looking good (samples of her scans are in the newest pictures.) This weekend Becky is speaking at the Montana Conference Women's retreat on reaching women for Christ. Thanks for your continued prayers. ***************************************************** Sunday, September 18, 2005 - Becky had surgery on her shoulder Wednesday, Sept. 14th. It was to repair a non-union fracture on the distal end of her clavicle. The surgeon removed the bone that had broken off of the end and attached some ligaments to support her shoulder properly. She has been in much pain since the surgery, but is improving in strength and resting well. We pray the repair will help her recover and regain the use of her left arm and hand. Thanks for your continued prayers. Tuesday, September 6, 2005 - Much has happened since the last update. Becky is progressing well with OT and PT. She has been going to the Canyons athletic club for rehab in the pool, and is doing well with her occupational therapy. Her Occupational Therapists are pleased with the progress in her left arm and feel confident that she will have good enough returns that they are working with extension in her fingers. This is a big step because it means that they feel she will have use of her fingers (which was uncertain for a while).
Today (September 5) Becky celebrated her
birthday! (Why else did you think they call it "Labor" day?! She
turned the Big 4-0, and doesn't mind me telling you that because it
sure beats the alternative. I (Barry) proclaimed it "Things Becky
likes day" and we did, and ate, all the things Becky likes. This
included eating Montana musk melons, halvah (tahini and sugar,
tahini is ground sesame seeds, try it, it's good!), havarti and brie
cheese and crackers, Martinelli's sparkling cider, Marci's potato
salad, Pepperidge farms orange milano cookies, corn on the cob, and
carrot cake and ice cream for dessert. It was a very fun day filled
with visits and calls from friends. Thanks so much for your love and
prayers.
Becky will be having surgery soon on her
collar bone. It didn't heal by itself and will need to be surgically
repaired. We will update you when we know the day of the surgery.
Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2005 - We had an exciting weekend as Becky took her longest trip since the accident. We took Paul and Spencer to Mount Ellis Academy in Bozeman. Paul is a Senior and Spencer is a Freshman. On the way there we went through the Big Hole and stopped at the scene of the accident to look things over and reflect on what we went through two months earlier. There were tears and prayers thanking God for seeing us through it all. On the way back we met with two of the EMT's that came with the Ambulance that day. They were glad to see that Becky was doing well and we had a great visit with them and had a chance to say "Thanks." We also stopped at St. James Hospital in Butte and saw some of the folks who took care of Becky there, including her three therapists, Larry (Respiratory), Duane (physical), and Nancy (occupational). Everyone was glad to see Becky's amazing progress. Thank you all for your prayers, Praise God! Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005 - Becky has made huge progress since she came home two weeks ago. Her walking has really improved, and her legs are getting stronger since she started riding a stationary recumbent bike. She has been doing some walking without a cane and gets around well, but still uses a cane for most walking (just in case!). Muscle tone has returned to her left arm and she is getting more movement in it each day. She has been able to raise and lower it, and can open and close her hand after some stretching and joint compression in therapy sessions. She's also becoming more independent around the house. Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005 - Becky is HOME! She returned home August 1. Windy Hayden built some excellent steps up to the deck so that Becky can come home and go right into her bedroom. She's making the transition to home very well and is able to bathe and dress herself. She is doing outpatient rehab at Marcus Daily hospital in Hamilton and really likes her occupational and physical therapists. Thanks so much for keeping her in your prayers. Updates and new pictures will be posted soon. Wednesday, July 27, 2005 - Becky is slated to be discharged from rehab on August 1. She will return home and begin outpatient rehab in Hamilton. Today (7-26) she exercised on a stationary recumbent bike for 15 minutes. It was a great workout and Becky felt really good about it. She hopes to get one for home so she can exercise well every day. Thanks for your prayers as we count down the days 'til Becky comes HOME! Monday, July 25, 2005 - Becky continues to improve the last few days. She had a great weekend with many visitors today. She began using a standard cane (only 1 foot!) and is walking very well with it. They are planning on discharging her from inpatient rehab a week from today. So she will go home then and continue outpatient rehab in Hamilton. As usual we rejoice in your notes, calls, visits, and words of encouragement. God is good! Tell of His goodness. Wednesday, July 20, 2005 - Becky is using the quad cane to get around. For long distances she still uses the wheelchair. In Rehab this morning she did a transfer into a regular car (in and out of the front seat), and walked up and down a flight of stairs using the hand rail! She will be doing therapy in the pool this afternoon. Tomorrow she has her weekly rehab team evaluation. Huge strides have been made this week, so it will be an amazing report. Tuesday, July 19, 2005 - Great news! Becky walked with a quad cane today (a cane with 4 feet on it)! She was very smooth and very stable. It was awesome to see her standing on her own two (three? six?) feet. What a great day! Keep praying for many more breakthrough days. She's going to be trying stairs tomorrow. Thanks for all your praying and cheering. Friday, July 15, 2005 - Becky made some huge gains today. Still on medicine to increase her blood pressure (one of the rare people on earth who needs meds to increase, most of us have plenty of blood pressure to go around (-:) Becky walked 160 feet! A full lap around one section in the hospital. She also did her full OT and PT sessions and went for a swim in the rehab pool this afternoon. That was the hi-light of her day as she could walk around virtually weightless and stretch her muscles against the resistance of the water. Our daughter Hannah (9) joined in, wearing her color coordinating goggles. Becky loved the mommy daughter time as well as the relaxing exertion (oxymoron?) that the pool provides. Thursday, July 14, 2005, 2:16pm - Becky has had some trouble doing standing and walking during PT because of her low blood pressure. Yesterday she passed out twice while trying to stand. The longest she stood was for about 8 minutes. Today her doctor gave he medicine to raise her blood pressure and she stood for 21 minutes! She would have stood longer but had to get to other tasks in rehab. During the standing her blood pressure remained stable. This is very good news because it means she can now progress with more tasks and more time in preparation towards walking on her own. She also met with her rehab team today (Dr. Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Social worker, Dietician, and Nurse). They told her that she was progressing well and feel very optimistic about her continued recovery. Her Doctor said that some people take as long as 3 months to do what she has done these past two weeks.
People have been asking about Spencer, so I
will give an update on him too. He went back to work on Tuesday. All his
injuries (scrapes and bruises) have healed and he's doing great.
Also we thank all of you for your cards,
letters, calls, visits, gifts, and prayers. We are so blessed by all our
friends, church families, and family. Special thanks to our church
leaders who are keeping everything going in Barry's absence. We praise
God for you.
Monday, July 11, 2005, 10:33am - Becky had an EMG today to test nerve fiber conduction to her left arm. The results were good with strong conduction to her deltoid, good conduction to her bicep, weaker (but present) conduction to her triceps, and also to her forearm. What this means is that there has been some nerve fiber tearing between her spinal cord and these muscles, cause by the injury to her neck and clavicle on that side. Since these are peripheral nerve fibers they do regenerate, but they grow at the rate of about 1 inch per month. This means that Becky will gradually regain much of her mobility in the left arm, but since her arm is nearly 2 feet long it may take as long as 2 years for the nerve fibers to grow to her fingertips. Obviously this progress (1 inch per month) is going to take some patience, but praise God that she is getting signals through to them, and that the fibers can re-grow. Monday, July 11, 2005, 9:14am - Becky had a wild night on the town last night. We were able to take her to Johnny Carino's (not sure on the spelling there. She enjoyed a great dinner with Barry, Holly Hilde, and Bonnie Siebly. Friday, July 8, 2005 - Becky did great in rehab yesterday. She did writing in Occupational Therapy, and is getting more movement in her different exercises. She began working with her legs on a pedal machine and is getting stronger each day. Praise to God! Thursday, July 7, 2005 - Some new news on Becky today. She walked with a walker 24 feet today! Also did most of the work getting herself dressed in Occupational Therapy this morning. Cards and letters keep her encouraged, and the plants and flowers you have sent really brighten up her room! Thanks so much for your love and prayers! Wednesday, July 6, 2005 More great news about Becky. Today, , in rehab, Becky took 6 steps with a walker. She also has new movement in her left foot, being able to move her toes up now, as well as down! Also she moved her left fingers today (another first!). These are huge improvements which do a lot to strengthen our faith that she is progressing as we have been praying. Sunday, July 3, 2005 -
Becky's progress today is
amazing! In rehab Becky helped her
therapists make a transfer from wheelchair to bed. She brought herself
to a standing position from her reclining wheel chair, stood under her
own power, while her Physical Therapists kept her balanced, then they
turned her and placed her back into her bed. Friday, July 1, 2005 - 1:23pm, Becky has arrived at Community Hospital. Please note the new mailing address below. Visitation times will be given after Becky's rehab schedule has been established. Friday, July 1, 2005 - 11:00am, Becky is in transport by ambulance to Community Hospital in Missoula for Rehab. Thursday, June 30, 2005 - GOOD NEWS! The Doctor did a full body scan (MRI) and found a bad bruise but no infection. Becky has wiggled a couple toes on her left foot and moved her left wrist from side to side....Yeah!! She is waiting for one more Doctor's approval then she will be headed for Rehab in Missoula tomorrow. Wednesday, June 29, 2005 - Becky has run a fever for the past 2 days. An Infection Disease Specialist has been brought in. Yesterday numerous tests were done to try to track down the origin of the fever. She has had some cramping in her left leg but that seems to have subsided. She has had more strength and movement in her left leg and some movement in her left wrist. She has been trying hard to move her fingers. Her right side seems to be getting stronger. |
